NIMIA
Playing online

Your table doesn't have to be in the room.

Way one

Play NIMIA on Discord with your own bot

NIMIA can play straight into a Discord voice channel through a bot you create yourself. The bot runs inside NIMIA on your own computer. There is no NIMIA server in between, and nothing to pay for.

The bot has its own audio stream, separate from your microphone. It always sends in high quality (128 kbps stereo), whatever bitrate your voice channel is set to.

Your players will hear everything with a very slight delay from you, nothing that should affect the play. The bot is online only while NIMIA is running: when you close NIMIA, the bot leaves the channel.

What you need

  • A Discord account.
  • A Discord server where you have the Manage Server permission.
  • NIMIA 1.0.1 or newer.
  • About five minutes. You only do this once.

Step 1: Create the bot

  1. Go to the Discord Developer Portal at discord.com/developers/applications. In NIMIA, Settings → Session → Open the Developer Portal takes you straight there.
  2. Click New Application.
  3. Give it a name. This is the name your players will see in the voice channel, so "NIMIA" works well. You can change it later.
  4. Accept the developer terms and click Create.

Little tip: Download the NIMIA logo or a picture of your group's bard and make it into the avatar of the bot so it looks nicer in your channel.

Step 2: Copy the token

  1. Open the Bot tab in the menu on the left.
  2. Click Reset Token and confirm. Discord may ask for your password or a two-factor code.
  3. Click Copy. Discord shows the token only once. If you lose it, just click Reset Token again and use the new one.

Whoever has the token controls your bot, so don't paste it anywhere except NIMIA. NIMIA stores it encrypted on this computer, tied to your Windows account, and only ever sends it to Discord. If anyone gets it, they can interrupt your music.

Step 3: Make the bot private

Still on the Bot tab, turn off Public Bot. Now only you can add the bot to a server.

Discord won't let you turn it off without opening the Installation tab and setting Install Link to None.

I don't think you need to change anything else. If there is any change or it doesn't work, please let me know.

Step 4: Connect NIMIA

  1. In NIMIA, open Settings → Session and scroll to DISCORD BOT.
  2. Paste the token and click Save token.

NIMIA checks the token with Discord and shows your bot as online. From now on, the bot logs in by itself every time you start NIMIA.

Step 5: Invite the bot to your server

  1. In NIMIA, click Invite to a server. Discord opens in your browser.
  2. Pick your server and click Authorize.

The bot asks for three permissions only: View Channels, Connect and Speak. It shouldn't read or send messages.

Start playing

Join a voice channel yourself, then either:

  • type /join in Discord, and the bot comes into your channel, or
  • click the channel in the list under DISCORD BOT in NIMIA.

Now play anything in NIMIA and your players hear it.

The bot works in regular voice channels, not Stage channels. It can be in one channel per server at a time, and it counts toward the channel's user limit.

Two things to do before your session

Mute the bot for yourself. In the voice channel, right-click the bot and choose Mute. This mutes it only for you; your players still hear it. If you skip this, you hear every sound twice, once from NIMIA and once from Discord, a little out of step.

The alternative is muting NIMIA in your Windows volume mixer. If you mute it in NIMIA directly, it mutes it for all players. The NIMIA controls inside the app control the actual music!

Wear headphones. With speakers, your microphone picks up the music and sends it to your players a second time, late, and Discord's noise suppression chops it up on the way.

What the bot sends

The bot sends exactly what NIMIA plays: ambient layers, sound effects and the built-in soundtracks, with your master volume, EQ, reverb and Mono Output applied.

YouTube is never sent! The YouTube player is a separate window outside NIMIA's mix, so your players won't hear YouTube music through the bot. Sorry guys, but YouTube's terms of service don't allow it so I can't enable it.

A few things follow from this:

  • Turning NIMIA's VOL fader down turns the bot down too.
  • Turning NIMIA down in the Windows volume mixer doesn't affect the bot.
  • If Keep Playing When Minimized is off, minimizing NIMIA silences the bot as well.

Discord commands

CommandWhat it does
/volumeSets NIMIA's master volume, from 0 to 100.
/stopStops everything, just like the KILL button.
/resumeBrings back what the last stop silenced: the scene, the layer levels and the soundtrack from where it left off. If something else is already playing, it leaves it alone. YouTube stays paused.
/joinBrings the bot into your voice channel.
/leaveSends the bot out of the channel.

Only the person who types a command sees the bot's reply.

By default, only people with the Manage Server permission can use these commands. To let your players use them too, open Server Settings → Integrations, pick your bot, and allow the commands for a role or for specific people.

For your players

Your players don't need to set anything up. If the music is too loud or too quiet for someone, they can right-click the bot and change its User Volume, just for themselves.

Privacy

Until you save a token, NIMIA doesn't connect to Discord at all.

With a token saved, NIMIA logs in to Discord and sends the audio to Discord's voice servers. The audio is end-to-end encrypted with Discord's own DAVE protocol.

The bot joins deafened and doesn't read messages.

To remove the token from your computer, click Forget token in NIMIA. To cancel it for good, click Reset Token in the Developer Portal, or delete the application there.

The details are in the privacy policy.

If something doesn't work

"Discord did not accept this token." The token was copied wrong, or it has been reset since. Click Reset Token in the Developer Portal and paste the new one.

The channel list in NIMIA is empty. The bot isn't on any server yet. Click Invite to a server.

The commands don't show up in Discord. Press Ctrl+R in Discord to reload it. If they still don't appear, check that you have the Manage Server permission on that server.

Discord says the application didn't respond. NIMIA isn't running. Start it and the bot comes back online.

Your players can't hear the bot. Check that nobody has server-muted it, and that its role is allowed to Connect and Speak in that channel.

You hear everything twice. Mute the bot for yourself (see "Two things to do before your session").

Way two

Play NIMIA through a virtual audio cable

For any voice app: Discord, TeamSpeak, Zoom or your virtual tabletop. If you play on Discord, use the bot instead: it's easier and sounds better.

What you need

  • VoiceMeeter Banana, free from vb-audio.com
  • Headphones
  • A restart, because VoiceMeeter installs an audio driver

Step 1: Install VoiceMeeter

  1. Download VoiceMeeter Banana from vb-audio.com and install it.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. The installer makes VoiceMeeter your Windows output. Switch it back: right-click the speaker icon, open Sound settings, and under Choose where to play sound, pick your headphones.

Step 2: Set up VoiceMeeter

Open Voicemeeter Banana from the Start menu, not the plain "Voicemeeter".

  1. A1, top right under HARDWARE OUT: choose your headphones, the WDM one.
  2. Stereo Input 1, the first column: click Select Input Device and choose your microphone, the WDM one. Turn A1 off, leave B1 on.
  3. Voicemeeter Input, under VIRTUAL INPUTS: leave A1 and B1 on. This is where NIMIA plays.

Step 3: Connect NIMIA

In NIMIA, open Settings → Audio and click Use for online play under ONLINE SESSION. NIMIA switches to mono and shows the device it found: Voicemeeter Input.

Step 4: Set up Discord

In User Settings → Voice & Video:

  1. Microphone: VB-Audio Voicemeeter VAIO, the one with Voicemeeter Out B1 underneath.
  2. Speaker: your headphones.
  3. Input Profile: Studio. The other profiles treat music as noise and chop it up.

Tips

  • Keep NIMIA well under your voice with its VOL fader.
  • Players only hear you when you speak up? Raise Fader Gain on Stereo Input 1, up to +12 dB.
  • Studio sends everything your microphone hears. Put the headset mic down by your chin to keep your breathing out.
  • Keep VoiceMeeter running. Discord now uses it as your microphone for every call, so switch Microphone back after the session if you close it.
  • Never set VoiceMeeter as your Windows output: everything your computer plays would go to your players.

If something doesn't work

  • No ONLINE SESSION in NIMIA: restart your computer, then open Settings → Audio again.
  • Nobody hears anything: VoiceMeeter isn't running.
  • Players hear the music but not you: Stereo Input 1 needs your microphone and B1 on.
  • The music comes through chopped up: Input Profile in Discord isn't Studio.
  • You can't hear NIMIA: Voicemeeter Input needs A1 on.
  • Players hear nothing: Discord's Microphone must be Voicemeeter Out B1.
Way three

Share NIMIA on Discord with Go Live

The quickest way to get NIMIA to your players: share the NIMIA window in your voice channel, with sound. Nothing to install and nothing to set up.

Your players see NIMIA as well as hear it, which can add to the atmosphere. Keep in mind that they'll also see the names of your scenes and sound effects, so a scene called "Dragon's Lair" might give something away.

How to share

  1. Join a voice channel.
  2. Click Share Your Screen.
  3. Choose the NIMIA window.
  4. Make sure Sound is turned on.
  5. Click Go Live.

You don't need Discord Nitro. Without it the picture is a little less sharp, but the sound is the same.

For your players

Each player needs to open the stream: click LIVE next to your name in the voice channel, or Watch Stream. Anyone who joins later has to open it again.

Everyone can set the stream's volume for themselves, separately from your voice.

Good to know

  • Wear headphones. With speakers, your microphone picks up the music and your players hear it twice, the second time late.
  • Only the NIMIA window is shared, not the rest of your screen.
  • Minimizing NIMIA may pause the picture. If Keep Playing When Minimized is off in Settings → Audio, minimizing NIMIA silences it completely.
  • If your group wants better sound and no stream to open, try the Discord bot instead.
